Ella Enchanted

So here is my first review for the "What's in a name?" reading challenge! For the "Name" category I chose Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.
The daughter of a rich merchant, Ella of Frell received at birth the gift of obedience by a fairy: every time she is given a direct order, she must obey. She soon realizes she is actually under a curse, which puts her at the hands of whoever knows her secret. But Ella is not a submissive girl and always tries to rebel to the curse, or to find ways to avoid orders.
This is also hinted at by Ella's name as a scullery maid: she is called "Cinder", which plus her real name makes "Cinderella". But unlike the traditional character from the fairy tale, Ella is passive and obedient only because of a curse; when she can act her real mind, she is feisty, spunky, and brave. She doesn't wait for the prince to save her, but looks for a way to break the curse herself.
Ella's most interesting feature, in my opinion, is that she has a talent for language learning: she can pick up foreign languages after listening to a few sentences. This particular ability helps her escape a few difficult situations. Wouldn't it be wonderful, I thought while reading the book, if you could actually learn a language so easily!
